A wonderful year for River’s women’s football has ended, with both age categories becoming champions of their corresponding AFA tournaments and the First Division winning the Federal Cup. These achievements attest to the fantastic work done to train female players. The U-16 and Reserve teams, both managed by Stefanía Fontán, former River player, have had a great year. Let’s not forget that, in June, the U-16 came third in the “Fiesta Evolución” tournament, which is played by the best South American teams.

At the local level, the U-16 team proved that coming third was no accident when they were crowned champions of a round-robin tournament involving 20 teams. Their stats speak for themselves: Stefanía Fontán’s team has won 18 out of 19 matches played, having only drawn once, with 112 goals for and only 8 goals against. The Reserve team became the 2021 champion, following a tough tournament. 20 matches played, 19 wins, including a 17-game win streak, and a single loss ─70 goals for and 8 goals against─, that was their journey to lifting the trophy. The youth teams had a great season and a year-end full of celebration.

Furthermore, the First Division team won the Federal Cup against Belgrano, becoming the champion of the tournament’s second edition. It was an evening all River Plate fans had been waiting for. That evening brought a year of so much work to a close. Winning this Cup was important, not only because it’s the first trophy of the Díaz era, but also because, ever since she arrived at the club, she has been committed to working, with humility and dedication, with her coaching staff.

“Las Millonarias” won the Federal Cup after playing four matches. In their Round-of-16 debut, they played against Guaraní Antonio Franco, winning 12-0. In the quarterfinals, they played against the always-tough UAI Urquiza, securing a tight 1-0 win, and qualifying for the semifinals. In the semifinals, against Huracán, the team made great progress winning 3-1, thanks to two goals from Carolina Birizamberri and one from Agostina Holzheier, qualifying for the final.

In the final, they faced Córdoba’s Belgrano, a team that has just been promoted to the First Division. River Plate dominated the whole game and the team coached by Daniela Díaz won 2-0, thus becoming the 2022 Federal Cup champions.

Following the celebrations on the playing field, surrounded by cheering fans, Justina Morcillo described how she felt when becoming champion of the Federal Cup: “Becoming champion is something beautiful, it’s something I’ve been dreaming for a long time, being a champion is something very special.”
